Resumen Introducción: Para incrementar el número de crías de tortugas marinas, es necesario mejorar estrategias de conservación, como incubación de nidos, en condiciones de vivero que contrarresten los efectos de las condiciones climáticas extremas. Objetivo: Comparar cinco parámetros de éxito reproductivo (éxito de eclosión, huevos sin desarrollo aparente, crías muertas, mortalidad embrionaria y período de incubación) de la tortuga marina Lepidochelys olivacea. Métodos: Se evaluó la incubación de nidos bajo dos períodos de reubicación de nidos (P1 ~28.8 °C agosto-septiembre y P2 ~27.1 °C octubre-noviembre, temperatura ambiental promedio, bajo condiciones de vivero, en el 2018 en Guerrero, México. Resultados: Se encontraron diferencias significativas en el éxito de eclosión y la mortalidad embrionaria entre los períodos de reubicación de nidos (P < 0.001). En P1, se observaron valores más bajos de éxito de eclosión (77.0 % P1 vs 88.6 % P2) y valores más altos de mortalidad embrionaria (13.7 % P1 vs 3.3 % P2) comparados con los de P2. Es importante señalar que, en el presente estudio la mortalidad embrionaria se presentó en una etapa tardía de desarrollo, es decir, en embriones casi completamente desarrollados. No se encontraron diferencias entre periodos respecto a los parámetros de huevos sin desarrollo aparente, crías muertas y período de incubación. Conclusiones: Las diferencias entre las condiciones ambientales durante el primer período de reubicación de nidos en comparación con el segundo período parecen afectar el éxito de eclosión y mortalidad embrionaria de L. olivacea. Por lo tanto, es importante tomar medidas al respecto durante esta etapa de incubación para tratar de mejorar la incubación de nidos bajo condiciones de vivero.


Abstract Introduction: In order to increase the number of sea turtle hatchlings, it is necessary to improve conservation strategies, such as nest incubation in hatchery conditions that counteract the effects of extreme climatic conditions. Objective: To compare five reproductive success parameters (hatching success, eggs with no apparent embryonic development, dead hatchlings, embryonic mortality, and incubation period) of the sea turtle Lepidochelys olivacea. Methods: The incubation of nests was evaluated under two periods of nest relocation, P1 ~28.8 °C (August and September) and P2 ~27.1 °C (October and November), average ambient temperature, under hatchery condition, in 2018 in Guerrero, Mexico. Results: Significant differences were found in hatching success and embryonic mortality between nest relocation periods (P < 0.001). In P1, lower values of hatching success (77.0 % P1 vs 88.6 % P2) and higher values of embryonic mortality (13.7 % P1 vs 3.3 % P2) were observed compared to those of P2. It's important pointing that, in the present study, embryonic mortality occurred at a late stage of development, that is, in almost fully developed embryos. No differences were found between periods regarding the parameters eggs with no apparent embryonic development, dead hatchlings and incubation period. Conclusions: The differences between the environmental conditions during the first period of nest relocation compared to the second period, respectively, seem to affect the hatching success and embryonic mortality of L. olivacea. Therefore, it is important to take action on this issue during this incubation stage to try to improve the incubation of nests under hatchery conditions.

Abstract Introduction: Although olive ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea) are the most abundant sea turtles in the world, quantitative information is scarce and unevenly distributed among regions. There are many management and conservation programs for this species, and assessments are necessary to identify nesting trends and effectively manage current conservation programs. PROTORMAR-UAS is a Research and Conservation program for the olive ridley turtle created by the Autonomous University of Sinaloa, Mexico. The program utilizes two biological stations: Santuario Playa Ceuta (SPC) and Playa Caimanero (PC). Objective: To evaluate the nesting trend of olive ridley turtles on two beaches in Northwestern Mexico and to predict prospective nesting trends for the next 30 years. Methods: Using annual nesting data collected over 40 years at SPC (1976-2016) and 30 years at PC (1986-2016), we evaluated nesting trends, hatching success, predation and poaching of olive ridley turtles on the two beaches in Northwestern Mexico. Then, prospective nesting estimates for the next 30 years were calculated predictive time series model. Results: A positive and significant correlation was identified between the number of annual nests and time for both beaches (rho = 0.850, P ≤ 0.01 for SPC; rho = 0.677, P ≤ 0.01 for PC); the average hatching success rates were 65.09 at SPC and 60.72 % at PC. The predictive time-series model indicated that the numbers of nests will continue to increase through 2045, increasing three-fold at SPC and six-fold at PC with respect to the last year of monitoring. Conclusions: There was a clear positive trend in the number of olive ridley sea turtle nests at both sites, which is consistent with trends found in other recent studies from the region. Therefore, we suggest that PC be designated a legally protected nesting area since it is located within the latitudinal limits of olive ridley nesting and given the need for resources for camp operation considering increased nesting and current problems with predation and poaching. Because in Mexico operating a nesting beach without any protection status implies not having a budget for its management.


Resumen Introducción: A pesar de que las tortugas golfinas (Lepidochelys olivacea) son las tortugas marinas más abundantes del mundo, su información cuantitativa disponible es escasa y se encuentra distribuida de manera desigual entre regiones. Existen muchos programas de manejo y conservación para esta especie, y sus evaluaciones son necesarias para identificar tendencias de anidación y poder manejar de manera efectiva los programas de conservación actuales. PROTORMAR-UAS es un programa de Investigación y Conservación de la tortuga golfina creado por la Universidad Autónoma de Sinaloa, México. El Programa cuenta con dos estaciones biológicas: Santuario de Playa Ceuta (SPC) y Playa Caimanero (PC). Objetivo: Evaluar la tendencia de anidación de la tortuga golfina en dos playas del noroeste de México y predecir las tendencias prospectivas de anidación para los próximos 30 años. Métodos: A partir de los datos de registros anuales de anidación de 40 años para SPC (1976-2016) y 30 años para PC (1986-2016), evaluamos las tendencias de anidación, el éxito de la eclosión y los problemas de depredación y saqueo de nidos de la tortuga golfina en las dos playas del noroeste de México. Posteriormente, se calcularon las estimaciones prospectivas de anidación para los próximos 30 años usando un modelo predictivo de series de tiempo. Resultados: Se identificó una correlación positiva y significativa entre el registro anual de nidos y el tiempo de estudio para ambas playas (rho = 0.850, P ≤ 0.01 para SPC; rho = 0.677 y P ≤ 0.01 para PC); así como el éxito de eclosión promedio de 65.09 para SPC y de 60.72 % para PC. El modelo predictivo de series de tiempo indicó que las anidaciones continuarán aumentando para el 2045, tres veces para SPC y seis para PC, con respecto al último año de monitoreo. Conclusiones: Hay una clara tendencia positiva de anidación de la tortuga golfina en ambos sitios, lo cual es consistente con la tendencia observada en otros estudios recientes de la región. Por lo tanto, sugerimos incluir a PC como un área de anidación legalmente protegida, la cual se ubica en los límites latitudinales de anidación de la tortuga golfina, dada la necesidad de contar con recursos disponibles para la operación del campamento ante el aumento de anidaciones y de problemas de depredación y saqueo. Porque en México operar una playa de anidación sin ningún estatus de protección implica no tener presupuesto para su manejo.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The loggerhead marine turtle, Caretta caretta, is a widely distributed and endangered species that is facing critical population decline, especially in Colombian Caribbean rookeries. Mitochondrial DNA sequence data are of great importance for the description, monitoring, and phylogenetic analyses of migratory turtle populations. In this study, the first full mitochondrial genome of a loggerhead turtle nesting in the Colombian Caribbean was sequenced and analyzed. This mitochondrial genome consists of 16 362 bp with a nucleotide composition of T: 25.7 %, C: 27 %, A: 35 % and G: 12 %. Sequence annotation of the assembled molecule revealed an organization and number of coding and functional units as reported for other vertebrate mitogenomes. This Colombian loggerhead turtle (Cc-AO-C) showed a novel D-Loop haplotype consisting of thirteen new variable sites, sharing 99.2 % sequence identity with the previously reported Caribbean loggerhead CC-A1 D-Loop haplotype. All 13 protein-coding genes in the Cc-AO-C mitogenome were compared and aligned with those from four other loggerhead turtles from different locations (Florida, Greece, Peru, and Hawaii). Eleven of these genes presented moderate genetic diversity levels, and genes COII and ND5 showed the highest diversity, with average numbers of pair-wise differences of 16.6 and 25, respectively. In addition, the first approach related to t-RNAs 2D and 3D structure analysis in this mitogenome was conducted, leading to observed unique features in two tRNAs (tRNATrp and tRNALeu). The marine turtle phylogeny was revisited with the newly generated data. The entire mitogenome provided phylogenetically informative data, as well as individual genes ND5, ND4, and 16S. In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of complete mitogenome data in revealing gene flow processes in natural loggerhead turtle populations, as well as in understanding the evolutionary history of marine turtles.


Resumen La tortuga marina caguama, Caretta caretta, es una especie ampliamente distribuida pero que enfrenta una crítica reducción de su población en las colonias del Caribe colombiano. Los datos de las secuencias de DNA mitocondrial son de gran importancia para la descripción, monitoreo y análisis de la filogenia de las tortugas migratorias. En este estudio se secuenció y analizó por primera vez el genoma mitocondrial completo de la tortuga caguama que anida en el Caribe colombiano. Este genoma tiene un tamaño de 16.362 pb con una composición de nucleótidos de T: 25.7 %, C: 27 %, A: 35 % y G: 12 %. La anotación de la secuencia de la molécula reveló una organización y número de unidades codificantes y funcionales como los reportados para mitogenomas de otros vertebrados. Esta tortuga caguama colombiana (Cc-AO-C) mostró un nuevo haplotipo D-Loop que contiene trece nuevos sitios variables, que comparten el 99.2 % de identidad de secuencia con el haplotipo CC-A1 D-Loop previamente reportado para la tortuga caguama del Caribe. Los trece genes que codifican proteínas en el mitogenoma Cc-AO-C se compararon y alinearon con los de otras cuatro tortugas caguama de distintas localidades (Florida, Grecia, Perú y Hawái). Once de estos genes presentaron niveles moderados de diversidad genética, y los genes COII y ND5 mostraron las diversidades nucleotídicas más altas, con un número promedio de diferencias entre pares de secuencias de 6.6 y 25, respectivamente. Adicionalmente, se llevó a cabo la primera aproximación relacionada con el análisis de la estructura 2D y 3D de t-RNAs en este mitogenoma, lo cual condujo a la observación de características únicas en dos tRNAs (tRNATrp y tRNALeu). La filogenia de las tortugas marinas fue revisada a la luz de la nueva información mitogenómica. El mitogenoma, así como los genes individuales ND5, ND4 y 16S, proporcionan datos filogenéticamente informativos. En conclusión, este estudio resalta la importancia de los datos del mitogenoma para revelar procesos de flujo génico en las poblaciones naturales de tortuga caguama, así como para entender la historia evolutiva de las tortugas marinas.


Resumo A tartaruga marinha Caretta caretta (Cc) é uma espécie amplamente distribuída e ameaçada de extinção que enfrenta um declínio crítico da população, especialmente nas colônias do Caribe colombiano. Marcadores moleculares, como sequências de DNA mitocondrial (mtDNA), são de grande importância para a descrição, monitoramento e análise filogenética de populações migratórias de tartarugas. Este estudo mostra a obtenção e análise do genoma mitocondrial de uma tartaruga-cabeçal Cc aninhada na costa Caribe da Colômbia. O genoma mitocondrial é constituído por 16.362 pb, com uma região não codificante (D-Loop), 13 genes codificadores de proteínas (13 PCG), 22 genes tRNA e 2 rRNA (16S e 12S) e uma frequência nucleotídica de T: 25.7 % , C: 27 %, A: 35 % e G: 12,2 %, todos organizados de forma semelhante à maioria dos mitogenomos de vertebrados. Esta tartaruga Cc colombiana apresentou um novo haplótipo D-Loop com treze sítios polimórficos quando comparado ao haplótipo CC-A1.1 (96 %). Além disso, onze genes codificadores de proteínas entre as tartarugas marinhas de diferentes origens apresentaram uma diversidade genética semelhante, exceto os genes COII e ND5 que apresentaram o maior número médio de diferenças entre pares de seqüências (16.600 e 25.000, respectivamente). Aqui relatase a primeira abordagem relacionada à análise de estruturas 2D e 3D para Cc e descrevese as diferenças em dois tRNAs (tRNATrp, tRNALeu). As inferências bayesianas e os métodos de máxima verossimilhança explicam melhor a filogenia das tartarugas marinhas quando utilizamse mitogenomes completos, assim como os genes ND5, ND4 e 16S. Os genes marcadores ATP8, ND4L e ND1 apresentaram relação filogenética pouco suportada. Como conclusão, este estudo apresenta o uso de mitogenomes completos como uma alternativa para melhorar a análise filogenética em tartarugas marinhas e é a primeira análise genética de mitogenomes completos de nidificação na Colômbia.

ABSTRACT

RESUMEN Esta investigación se realizó en el municipio de Bahía Solano, Colombia y tuvo como objetivos: 1) detectar la circulación de eritrocitos con lesiones nucleares en 55 hembras adultas de tortuga golfina (Lepidochelys olivácea), empleando la inmunotinción de naranja de acridina y 2) correlacionar sus frecuencias con aspectos biométricos y fisiológicos. Se determinó una frecuencia de eritrocitos con micronúcleos (EMN) de 0,6 ± 0,6 y de protuberancias nucleares (EPN) de 2,1 ± 1,9. Mediante un análisis multivariado a través de la correlación de Pearson y de Kruskal-Wallis (p<0,05), no se encontró ninguna correlación positiva entre el nivel de frecuencia de EPN ni de EMN con los parámetros biométricos y fisiológicos evaluados. Se estableció una diferencia estadísticamente significativa (p= 0,035) entre las frecuencias de EPN y de EMN. Los resultados hallados indican que esta especie presenta eritrocitos circulantes con los daños nucleares mencionados y reporta por primera vez la presencia de estrés genotóxico para la especie en Colombia. Así mismo, brinda información clave para investigaciones posteriores en el área de la ecotoxicología de especies marinas amenazadas.


ABSTRACT This research was conducted in the municipality of Bahia Solano, Colombia, and had as a goal to detect damage erythrocytes circulating with nuclear lesions in fifty-five Olive Ridley adult females using acridine orange immunostain, and correlate its frequencies with some physiological and biometric parameters. We determine a micronucleated erythrocytes (MNE) frequency of 0.6 ± 0.6 and nuclear buds (NBE) of 2.1 ± 1.9. We not found any relationship between the nuclear lesions with physiological or biometric parameters evaluated (Pearson and Kruskal-Wallis, p<0.05). We define a significative statistical difference (p=0.035) between both nuclear lesions frequencies. This results show nuclear damages in erythrocytes of Olive Ridley sea turtle for the first time in Colombia as an outcome of genotoxic stress. Also contributes key information for future research in the ecotoxicology area for endangered marine species.

ABSTRACT

A tartaruga-verde, Chelonia mydas, apresenta distribuição cosmopolita. No Brasil, ocorre na costa, porém desova em ilhas oceânicas. A helmintofauna de tartarugas-verdes é diversificada, podendo-se dizer que tem a maior diversidade comparada com outras espécies de tartarugas. Objetivou-se avaliar aspectos ecológicos da comunidade de helmintos gastrointestinais e relacionar com a condição corporal de tartarugas-verdes recolhidas no litoral do Espírito Santo. Foram utilizados 36 exemplares juvenis da espécie C. mydas. O trato gastrointestinal foi separado e dividido em porções: esôfago/estômago, intestino delgado e intestino grosso. Cada porção foi inspecionada à procura de parasitos, e os exemplares encontrados foram separados para posterior identificação. Das 36 tartarugas avaliadas, 34 estavam parasitadas por helmintos (94,44%), com um total de 10.734 helmintos. Foram encontradas 18 espécies de trematodas pertencentes a quatro famílias. A riqueza de espécies encontrada foi de 4,29±2,19 (1-10) e a intensidade média de infecção foi de 315,64±281,83 (2-994) helmintos. Os parasitos mais prevalentes foram Cricocephalus albus, Metacetabulum invaginatum e Neoctangium travassosi, ambos com 61,11% (22/36), Pronocephalus obliquus com 33,33% (12/36), e Glyphicephalus lobatus com 30,55% (11/36). O helminto mais abundante foi M. invaginatum com 70,63 helmintos/animal, seguido de C. albus com 58,77 helmintos/animal e N. travassosi com 41,75 helmintos/animal.(AU)


The green turtle, Chelonia mydas has worldwide distribution. In Brazil, it is found on the coast, but spawning occurs on oceanic islands. The helminth fauna of green turtles is diverse and has the greatest diversity when compared with other species of turtles. This study aims to evaluate ecological aspects of gastrointestinal helminth community and connect to the body condition of green turtles collected on the coast of Espírito Santo. A total of 36 juvenile specimens of the species C. mydas were used. The gastrointestinal tract was removed and divided into portions: esophagus/stomach, small intestine and large intestine. Each portion was inspected looking for parasites and the specimens found were separated for later identification. Of the 36 turtles evaluated, 34 were parasitized by helminths (94.44%), with a total of 10,734 helminths. Results include findings of 18 species of trematodes belonging to four families. The species richness was 4,29 ± 2,19 (1-10) and the mean intensity of infection was 315,64 ± 281,83 (2-994) helminths. The prevalent parasites were Cricocephalus albus, Metacetabulum invaginatum and Neoctangium travassosi, both with 61,11% (22/36), Pronocephalus obliquus with 33,33% (12/36), and Glyphicephalus lobatus with 30,55% (11/36). The abundant helminth was Metacetabulum invaginatum with helminths 70,63/animal, followed by C. albus with helminths 58,77/animal and N. travassosi with helminths 41,75/animal.(AU)

Resumen En las playas de arribada de Costa Rica el comportamiento de anidación y otros aspectos de la biología de Lepidochelys olivacea han sido ampliamente estudiados, pero existe poca información acerca de las playas de anidación solitaria en especial del Pacífico Sur. Por este motivo el objetivo del presente estudio es describir los aspectos relevantes del comportamiento de la anidación de L. olivacea en Playa Tortuga, Pacífico Sur de Costa Rica, durante tres temporadas de anidación (2010, 2011, 2012). Se dividió la playa en 14 sectores de 100m cada uno, a partir de esto se realizaron patrullajes todas noches durante los meses de julio a diciembre (2010) y de julio a enero (2011, 2012), con el fin de registrar el comportamiento de anidación de las tortugas y proteger sus nidadas. Las hembras observadas fueron identificadas mediante la aplicación de marcas metálicas en sus aletas posteriores, se registró el número de huevos, el sector de ubicación de las nidadas, la hora, datos biométricos ancho y largo curvo del caparazón (ACC-LCC), también se contabilizaron todas las nidadas efectivas (con o sin tortuga). Se logró marcar 100 hembras de L. olivacea, y se contabilizaron un total de 233 nidadas en Playa Tortuga. Se determinó una frecuencia de anidación de dos veces por temporada con un intervalo de reanidación de 14 a 20 días y para cuatro individuos se registró un período de remigración de un año. Se estimó para las tres temporadas una población total de 117 hembras y se determinó el período de agosto a setiembre como el pico de anidación. Con respecto a la biometría, se obtuvo un valor de LCC promedio de 69.91±1.05cm y un valor de ACC promedio de 70.476+/-1.767cm. Un total de 18 711 huevos fueron colectados y 9 858 neonatos fueron reclutados. Se ha comprobado a partir de las tres temporadas de monitoreo que Playa Tortuga debe de ser considerada como una playa de anidación de L. olivacea, a pesar de que que su población actual de hembras anidantes es reducida en comparación a otras playas del Pacífico Sur. El marcaje es una herramienta útil para la caracterización de la frecuencia e intervalo de reanidación.


Abstract Olive Ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea) have been amply studied on Costa Rican beaches that experience mass nestings, "arribadas", both in their nesting behavior and other aspects of their biology; however, very little published information exists about beaches where the Olive Ridley is nesting in solitary form, especially along the Southern Pacific Coast. For this reason, the objective of this study is to describe relevant nesting aspects, such as number of nest per season and nesting sites of L. olivacea on the Tortuga Beach in the South Pacific of Costa Rica, during three nesting seasons (2010, 2011, 2012). The beach was divided into 14 sectors of 100m each. Beach patrols were conducted every night from July to December (2010) and July to January (2011, 2012), with the purpose of observing and recording nesting behavior in the turtles as well as to protect their nests. The females observed were identified by means of metal tags applied to their rear flippers. Other data collected included: number of eggs deposited, nest location, hour, biometric data (width and length taken along the curve of the carapace), and the total of nests laid (found with or without the turtle present). After three seasons, 100 females of Olive Ridley Sea Turtle were successfully marked, and a total of 233 nests were counted. The frequency of re-nesting of an individual during a season was of every 14 to 20 days and four individuals re immigrated to nest again over the period of one year. The total population of nesting females during these three years was estimated at 117. The peak nesting happens in September, more sea turtles visited the beach during this period in all the seasons reported. With respect to biometry, the average value of the LCC was 69.91±1.05cm and the average value of the WCC was 70.476+/-1.767cm. A total of 18 711 eggs were collected and 9 858 were successfully hatched. The Tortuga Beach was proven to be a nesting beach of the species L. olivacea; the population of nesting females on the beach can be considered significantly reduced in comparison with other nesting beaches of the same species along the Southern Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. Furthermore, marking the turtles with metal tags has proven a useful tool towards the characterization of the nesting aspects of the sea turtles, such as the frequency and interval of re-nesting, and other variables such as the re immigration which requires a period of time greater than the time period of the study to date. Resumen Desde 2006 a 2012, la anidación de la tortuga lora (Lepidochelys olivacea) fue monitoreada en bahía Drake, un enclave reconocido internacionalmente por su excelente oferta eco-turística que se localiza en la región noroeste de la península de Osa. Sorprendentemente, esta área dispone de playas de anidación solitaria de tortuga lora que han permanecido casi desadvertidas hasta fechas recientes. Durante este periodo de monitoreo, 958 nidos fueron registrados en playa Drake (promedio anual: 136.9; densidad: 3.80 nidos/100m de playa), de los cuales 363 (37.9%) fueron reubicados a un vivero. Antes de 2006, la pérdida anual de nidos fue superior al 85% debido al saqueo en playa; desde 2006, el porcentaje del saqueo de nidos se mantuvo en un promedio del 10.1%. Además, un total de 335 hembras fueron identificadas con placas metálicas; el promedio de la longitud curva del caparazón fue de 66.1cm; el promedio del ancho curvo del caparazón fue de 70.2cm, y el tamaño promedio por nidada fue de 96.3 huevos. El promedio del éxito de eclosión para los nidos reubicados en vivero fue de 79.2%, y más de 61 000 neonatos fueron liberados al mar durante este periodo. Este proyecto es un ejemplo de una iniciativa exitosa de conservación, eco-turismo y desarrollo comunitario.


Abstract The nesting of the Olive Ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea) sea turtle was studied from 2006 to 2012 in Drake Bay, Costa Rica, an important solitary nesting site and center of eco-tourism in the Osa Peninsula. During this period, 958 nests were recorded (mean: 136.9 nests per season; density: 3.8 nests/100m of beach per season), of which 38% were relocated to a hatchery. The incidence of poaching was reduced from 85% in 2005 to a mean of 10.1% from 2006-2012. A total of 335 nesting females were tagged; the mean curved length of carapace was 66.1cm, the mean curved width was 70.2cm, and the mean number of eggs per nest was 96.3. A mean rate of reproductive success of 79.2% was obtained and over 61 000 hatchlings were liberated from the hatchery. ABSTRACT

This study analysed sea turtle strandings on the coast of Paraíba State, Northeastern Brazil, from August 2009 to July 2010. A total of 124 strandings were recorded in this period: green turtle Chelonia mydas (n = 106), hawksbill Eretmochelys imbricata (n = 15), olive ridley Lepidochelys olivacea (n = 2) and loggerhead Caretta caretta (n = 1). Of all turtles for which the Curved Carapace Length (CCL) was measured (n = 122), only 12 individuals (9.7%) were adults. Twenty individuals had synthetic anthropogenic debris in the gastrointestinal tract. Other traces of human interactions were observed in 43 individuals, such as injuries caused by entanglement in fishing lines or nets, collisions with vessels, direct contact with oil spills and lesions caused by sharp or spiked objects. Moreover, in 28.5% of the stranded turtles, the presence of external tumors was noticed, suggestive of fibropapillomatosis and in 9.7%, shark bite marks were observed. Of the 107 individuals that were sexed, 76 were females and 31 were males. Most turtles (72.6%) became stranded during the spring/summer (between October and March). We found evidence of human interactions (injuries) in half of the strandings, but in most cases it was not possible to determine if such interactions were the cause of death. A logistic regression found a significant relationship between CCL, ingestion of debris and lesions caused by sharks or spiked objects. Systematic data collection from stranded sea turtles can provide useful biological information, such as seasonal and spatial patterns in their occurrence and mortality, age structure, sex ratio and diet, as well as possible mortality causes.


Este estudo analisou encalhes de tartarugas marinhas na costa do Estado da Paraíba, Nordeste do Brasil, de agosto de 2009 a julho de 2010. Neste período, 124 encalhes foram registrados: tartaruga-verde Chelonia mydas (n = 106), tartaruga-de-pente Eretmochelys imbricata (n = 15), tartaruga-oliva Lepidochelys olivacea (n = 2) e cabeçuda Caretta caretta (n = 1). Dentre todas as tartarugas que tiveram o Comprimento Curvilíneo da Carapaça (CCC) medido (n = 122), apenas 12 indivíduos (9,7%) foram considerados adultos. Vinte indivíduos tinham detritos antropogênicos sintéticos no trato gastrointestinal. Em 43 indivíduos, outros vestígios de interações humanas foram observados, tais como lesões causadas por emaranhamento em linhas ou redes de pesca, colisões com embarcações, contato direto com derramamentos de óleo e lesões causadas por objetos perfurocortantes. Além disso, em 28,5% das tartarugas encalhadas, foi observada a presença de tumores externos sugestivos de fibropapilomatose e em 9,7%, foram observadas marcas de mordidas de tubarão. Dos 107 indivíduos sexados, 76 eram fêmeas e 31 eram machos. A maioria das tartarugas (72,6%) encalhou durante a primavera/verão (entre outubro e março). Foram encontrados sinais de interações humanas (lesões) em metade dos encalhes, mas na maioria dos casos, não foi possível determinar se tais interações foram a causa da morte. A regressão logística encontrou uma relação significativa entre CCC e ingestão de detritos, lesões causadas por objetos perfuro-cortantes e ataques de tubarões. A coleta sistemática de dados de tartarugas marinhas encalhadas pode fornecer informações biológicas úteis, tais como padrões sazonais e espaciais na sua ocorrência e mortalidade, estrutura etária, razão sexual, dieta, bem como possíveis causas de mortalidade.

ABSTRACT

Fibropapillomatosis (FP) is a benign tumoral disease that affects sea turtles, hampering movement, sight and feeding, ultimately leading to death. In Brazil, the disease was described for the first time in 1986. Research suggests the involvement of a herpesvirus in association with environmental and genetic factors as causal agents of FP. The objective of the present study was to detect and characterize this herpesvirus in sea turtles living in the coast of state Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brazil. From October 2008 to July 2010, 14 turtles were observed between the beaches of Torres and Tavares, of which 11 were green turtles (Chelonia mydas) and 3 were loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta). All turtles were young and mean curved carapace length was 37.71±7.82cm, and varied from 31 to 55cm. Only one green turtle presented a 1cm, papillary, pigmented fibropapilloma. Skin and fibropapilloma samples were analyzed by conventional and real time PCR assays to detect and quantify herpesvirus. All skin samples were negative, though the fibropapilloma specimen was positive in both tests. Viral load was 9,917.04 copies of viral genome per milligram of tissue. The DNA fragment amplified from the fibropapilloma sample was sequenced and allocated in the Atlantic phylogeographic group. This study reports the first molecular characterization of herpesvirus associated with fibropapilloma in turtles from the coast of RS.


A fibropapilomatose (FP) é uma doença tumoral benigna que pode causar a morte das tartarugas marinhas por dificultar a sua locomoção, visão e alimentação. Pesquisas sugerem o envolvimento de um herpesvirus em associação com fatores ambientais e genéticos como agentes causais da FP. No Brasil, foi descrita pela primeira vez em 1986. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi detectar e caracterizar esse herpesvírus em tartarugas marinhas do litoral do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul (RS). De outubro de 2008 a julho de 2010, foram encontradas 14 tartarugas marinhas entre as praias de Torres e Tavares, das quais 11 eram tartarugas verdes (Chelonia mydas) e 3 eram tartarugas cabeçudas (Caretta caretta). Todas as tartarugas eram jovens e o comprimento curvilíneo de carapaça médio foi de 37,71±7,82cm, variando de 31 a 55cm. Apenas uma tartaruga verde apresentou um fibropapiloma de 1cm, pigmentado e de superfície papilar. Amostras de pele e do fibropapiloma foram submetidas a PCR convencional e PCR em tempo real para detecção e quantificação do herpesvírus. Todas as amostras de pele foram negativas e o fibropapiloma foi positivo em ambas as técnicas, apresentando uma carga viral de 9.917,04 cópias de genoma viral/mg de tecido. O fragmento de DNA amplificado na amostra de fibropapiloma foi sequenciado e revelou pertencer ao grupo filogeográfico do Atlântico. Essa é a primeira caracterização molecular do herpesvirus associado ao fibropapiloma em tartarugas do litoral do RS.

Sea turtles are threatened to the point of extinction. The major goal of rehabilitating sick individuals is to eventually reintroduce them back into their habitat. In this way, they contribute to species preservation, as well as maintaining equilibrium of the ecosystems. Biochemical analysis is a commonly used test to detect illness and evaluate the general health of the animals. However, the data in the literature on sea turtles are scarce and the majority of studies used small sample sizes, being the majority of animals in captivity. The aim of the present study is to establish baseline biochemical profile values for free-ranging, nesting, female loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta). The baseline values can then be used for comparison in the overall evaluation, physiologic status and disease diagnostics of diverse populations of sea turtles. Twenty-eight females in their reproductive period were used from Farol de São Thomé (21°45'15"S - 41°19'28"W), city of Campos dos Goytacazes, north-fluminense region. The samples were collected without anticoagulant through venapuncture of the dorsal, cervical sinus. The average values determined were calcium, phosphorus, cholesterol and triglycerides, demonstrating a correlation with vitellogenesis and egg formation. The fact that females reduce feeding in the period preceding egg laying, influenced the average concentration of urea (35.25mg dL-1), sodium (147mEq L-1), potassium (28mEq L-1), uric acid (0.6mg dL-1) and lipids. Carapace length and width, and the weight of the turtles showed a positive correlation with liver enzymes ALT and AST, suggesting that animals with larger hepatic volume have greater enzymatic activity.


As tartarugas marinhas são animais ameaçados de extinção. Sendo assim, o maior objetivo em reabilitar os indivíduos doentes é posteriormente reintroduzi-los em seu habitat. Dessa forma, contribui-se para a preservação das espécies e para a manutenção do equilíbrio dos ecossistemas. As análises bioquímicas são exames bastante utilizados na detecção de doenças e na avaliação do estado geral dos animais. Apesar disso, os dados na literatura para tartarugas marinhas ainda são escassos, e a maioria dos estudos utiliza um pequeno número de animais, sendo a maior parte deles de cativeiro. O presente estudo tem por objetivo realizar o perfil bioquímico de indivíduos do sexo feminino de tartarugas marinhas de vida livre da espécie Caretta caretta em processo de nidação, bem como estabelecer a correlação do perfil bioquímico destes animais com seu tamanho. Os valores médios obtidos poderão ser utilizados posteriormente como comparativo para avaliação do estado geral e para o diagnóstico de doenças de diversas populações de tartarugas marinhas. Foram utilizadas 28 fêmeas em período reprodutivo, em Farol de São Thomé (21°45'15"S - 41°19'28"W), no município de Campos dos Goytacazes, região norte-fluminense. As amostras foram coletadas sem anticoagulante, através de venopunção do seio venoso cervical dorsal. Os valores médios encontrados para as variáveis cálcio, fósforo, colesterol e triglicerídeos demonstram a correlação desses componentes com o processo de vitelogênese e a formação do ovo. O fato de as fêmeas reduzirem a alimentação, no período que antecede a postura dos ovos, influenciou a concentração média de uréia (35,25mg dL-1), sódio (147mEq L-1), potássio, ácido úrico e lipídios. As variáveis vinculadas ao tamanho das tartarugas apresentaram correlação positiva com enzimas ALT e AST, sugerindo que animais com maior volume hepático apresentam maior atividade enzimática.

Leatherback sea turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) nest on dynamic, erosion-prone beaches. Erosive processes and resulting nest loss have long been presumed to be a hindrance to clutch survival. In order to better understand how leatherbacks cope with unstable nesting beaches, I investigated the role of beach erosion in leatherback nest site selection at Playa Gandoca, Costa Rica. I also examined the potential effect of nest relocation, a conservation strategy in place at Playa Gandoca to prevent nest loss to erosion, on the temperature of incubating clutches. I monitored changes in beach structure as a result of erosion at natural nest sites during the time the nest was laid, as well as in subsequent weeks. To investigate slope as a cue for nest site selection, I measured the slope of the beach where turtles ascended from the sea to nest, as well as the slopes at other random locations on the beach for comparison. I examined temperature differences between natural and relocated nest sites with thermocouples placed in the sand at depths typical of leatherback nests. Nests were distributed non-randomly in a clumped distribution along the length of the beach and laid at locations that were not undergoing erosion. The slope at nest sites was significantly different than at randomly chosen locations on the beach. The sand temperature at nest depths was significantly warmer at natural nest sites than at locations of relocated nests. The findings of this study suggest leatherbacks actively select nest sites that are not undergoing erosive processes, with slope potentially being used as a cue for site selection. The relocation of nests appears to be inadvertently cooling the nest environment. Due to the fact that leatherback clutches undergo temperaturedependent sex determination, the relocation of nests may be producing an unnatural male biasing of hatchlings. The results of this study suggest that the necessity of relocation practices, largely in place to protect nests from erosion, should be reevaluated to ensure the proper conservation of this critically endangered species. Sea turtles are vulnerable to anthropogenic effects, and impact traumas are a common cause of death among these animals. Carapace and skull fractures are usually related to vessel collisions or propeller impacts. However, intentional traumas inflicted by humans are also considered as a potential threat. The purpose of this article is to describe the diagnosis and rehabilitation procedures of a juvenile green turtle (Chelonia mydas) after severe head trauma with brain hemorrhage. The data presented here can be used as a reference for future cases of head trauma in chelonians.


Tartarugas marinhas são animais ameaçados de extinção. Por isso, o principal objetivo em reabilitar indivíduos feridos é posteriormente reintroduzi-los em seu habitat. Quelônios marinhos apresentam grande vulnerabilidade a efeitos antropogênicos, e a ocorrência de traumatismos impactantes constituem uma importante causa de óbitos entre esses animais. Fraturas de carapaça e crânio estão normalmente associadas a colisões por embarcações. No entanto, lesões intencionais provocadas por humanos também podem ser consideradas ameaças em potencial. O objetivo deste estudo é descrever o diagnóstico e a reabilitação de um indivíduo jovem de tartaruga verde (C. mydas) após traumatismo craniano severo com hemorragia cerebral. Os dados apresentados poderão ser utilizados como referências para casos futuros de traumatismos afetando a região da cabeça de quelônios.

Para avaliar a morfologia do tubo digestório da tartaruga verde (Chelonia mydas) 10 animais, 9 juvenis e 1 adulto, foram analisados. A retirada dos órgãos digestórios procedeu-se após abertura do plastrão. A descrição e a medida do comprimento de cada órgão [esôfago, estômago, intestino delgado (ID) e intestino grosso (IG)] foram realizadas com o tubo digestório aberto. Os resultados mostraram que tanto nos animais juvenis como no adulto, o esôfago foi marcado pela presença de papilas pontiagudas em sua mucosa interna. O estômago apresentou aspecto saculiforme com fundo cego. No ID foi observado pregas reticulares na mucosa duodenal, enquanto o jejuno e do íleo mostrou pregas retilíneas longitudinais. O IG foi marcado pela alternância de regiões abauladas (haustros ou saculações) e estreitamentos. A microscopia do tudo digestório em C. mydas revelou esôfago com mucosa pregueada revestida por epitélio estratificado pavimentoso queratinizado. O estômago mostrou-se dividido em regiões: cárdica, fúndica, pilórica, as quais diferiam quanto ao número de glândulas e disposição da camada muscular. O ID apresentou-se marcado por vilosidades, e o IG por mucosa pregueada contendo glândulas na lâmina própria. A morfologia do tubo digestório da tartaruga verde mostrou-se adaptada ao seu hábito alimentar, possuindo especializações e um longo trato digestório que promove o aumento da superfície de absorção, já que seu alimento é de difícil digestão.


The morphology of the digestive tube of the green turtle (Chelonia mydas) was evaluated. Nine young e 1 adult turtles were analyzed. The digestive organs withdrew occurred after plastron opening. The length's description and measurement from each organ [esophagus, stomach, small intestine (SI) and large intestine (LI)] were made with digestive tube opened. The results showed that in both the adult and young animals, the esophagus from all species were marked by the presence of pointed papillae on internal mucous. The stomach presented saclike shape with blind fund. In the SI, reticular pleats in the duodenal mucous membrane have been observed, while the jejune and the ileum showed rectilinear longitudinal pleats. The LI was marked by the alternation of arched areas (haustra or sacculations) and narrowings. The microscopy of digestive tube from C. mydas revealed esophagus with folded mucous covered by keratinized and stratified squamous epitheliums. The stomach was divided in regions: cardiac, fundic e pyloric which differed as to the number of glands and the muscle layer's arrangement. The SI presented marked by microvillus, and LI by folded mucous with glands the lamina propria. The morphology of the tube digestive of the green turtle showed to be adapted to your eating habits. A long the digestive tract and specializations provide greater area of absorption and more efficiency in digestion in this species.

ABSTRACT

With the aim to know the types of malformations in Olive Ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea) embryos and neonates, and determine their prevalence and intensity indexes and %² in Nuevo Vallarta Nayarit, 100 nests were surveyed. From each nest, the total number of eggs and the number of embryos and neonates with any kind of abnormalities were registered. In 21 types of malformations located on seven anatomical regions, three new types were registered: anterior flippers amelia, bifurcated anterior flippers and rinodimo. The carapace presented significantly higher frequency of abnormalities (41.7%), followed by mandibles and general malformations (17.6% each one). The most frecuent type of malformation was the compressed carapace (26.9%), followed by albinism (14.8%) and xiphosis (13.2%). Prevalence (50% on nests and 1.8% on the organisms) and intensity (2.78 malformed organisms per nest and 1.57 malformations per organism) were high medium, compared to previous studies. Sea turtles from Bahía de Banderas may be exposed to anthropogenic contaminants, but is necessary to do long term studies to corroborate this possible relationship.


Con el propósito de conocer las malformaciones en embriones y neonatos de tortuga golfina (Lepidochelys olivacea) en Nuevo Vallarta, Nayarit, México, se revisaron 100 nidos de dichos animales para registrar el número total de huevos, de embriones y de neonatos con algún tipo de malformación; los datos se analizaron con índices de prevalencia e intensidad y pruebas de Ji cuadrada. En 21 tipos de malformaciones localizadas en siete regiones anatómicas, se registraron tres nuevos tipos: bifurcación de aletas anteriores, biamelia anterior y rinodimo. La región corporal con mayor frecuencia de malformaciones fue el caparazón (41.7%), seguida por las mandíbulas y las malformaciones generales (17.6% cada una). El tipo de malformación más frecuente fue el caparazón comprimido (26.9%), seguido de albinismo (14.8%) y quifosis (13.2%). La prevalencia (50% de los nidos y 1.8% de los organismos) y la intensidad (2.78 malformaciones/nido y 1.57 malformaciones/organismo) resultaron medianamente altas, en comparación con estudios previos. Las tortugas marinas de Bahía de Banderas pueden estar expuestas a contaminantes antropogénicos, pero aún falta hacer estudios a largo plazo para corroborar esta posible relación.

Poucos estudos foram realizados sobre a nidificação de tartarugas marinhas no litoral sul da Bahia, região que está passando por um processo rápido de ocupação turística que pode ameaçar ainda mais estas espécies. Por estes motivos, este estudo teve como objetivos identificar as espécies de tartarugas marinhas que desovam no local e descrever as principais características de suas ninhadas. Durante quatro temporadas reprodutivas, de 2004 a 2008, foram identificados e monitorados os ninhos encontrados nas praias localizadas entre Uruçuca e Itacaré no litoral sul da Bahia. As variáveis coletadas foram: tamanho de ninhada, duração da incubação, sucesso de eclosão e fases de mortalidade embrionária. Foi registrada uma média de 37 ± 6,2 ninhos por temporada, com maior freqüência de ninhos das espécies Caretta caretta e Eretmochelys imbricata, tendo sido registradas também desovas esporádicas de Chelonia mydas. A temporada de desova de C. caretta ocorre de outubro a janeiro e de E. imbricata de dezembro a março. Este deslocamento temporal das temporadas reprodutivas pode estar relacionado a uma adaptação para minimizar a competição interespecífica. Além da época de nidificação, as duas espécies diferiram no tamanho de suas ninhadas, mas não diferiram na duração da incubação e no sucesso de eclosão. Diante dos resultados, acredita-se que áreas com baixa concentração de ninhos também devem ser alvo de programas de conservação, devido à sua relevância para a ampliação da variação genotípica e, sobretudo, fenotípica, das espécies de tartarugas marinhas, de forma que as mesmas possam se adaptar e sobreviver às constantes ameaças às quais estão submetidas. Tais programas de conservação podem ser estabelecidos por meio de parcerias entre organizações não governamentais e instituições privadas e a instituição governamental responsável pela conservação das tartarugas marinhas (Centro TAMAR/ICMBio).


Few studies have been carried out on nesting of sea turtles in the southern coast of Bahia, an area that is experiencing a fast process of tourist occupation what can increase levels of threat to these species. Thus, this study aimed to identify sea turtle species that nest in the area and to describe the main characteristics of their clutches. During four reproductive seasons, from 2004 to 2008, we identified and monitored nests found at beaches located between the municipalities of Uruçuca and Itacaré, in the southern coast of Bahia. The collected variables were: clutch size, incubation duration, hatching success and stages of embryonic mortality. We registered an average of 37 ± 6.2 nests per season, with nests of Caretta caretta and Eretmochelys imbricata being more frequent, along with sporadic nests of Chelonia mydas. Nesting season of C. caretta extends from October to January and that of E. imbricata from December to March. This temporary displacement of reproductive seasons might be related to a selective adjustment to minimize competition among species. Besides the time of nesting, the two species differed also in clutch size, but they did not differ in incubation duration and in hatching success. According to our results, we believe that areas with low concentration of nests should also be a target of conservation programs, due to their relevance to the increase of genotypic, and specially fenotypic, variation of sea turtle species, so that Brazilian populations can adapt and survive to the constant threats. Those conservation programs can be established by partnerships between non-governmental organizations and private institutions and the Brazilian government institution for the conservation of sea turtles (Centro TAMAR/ICMBio).

ABSTRACT

The occurrence of Amphiorchis caborojoensis Fischthal & Acholonu 1976 and Carettacola stunkardi Martin & Bamberger 1952 in a young specimen of Hawksbill sea turtle Eretmochelys imbricata Linnaeus 1758 in Brazil was reported. Five A. caborojoensis trematodes were found in the small intestine (n=2) and liver (n=3), and two adult C. stunkardi specimens were collected from body wash. This is the first report of parasites of E. imbricata in Brazilian waters and Southwestern Atlantic Ocean and the second report of members of the Spirorchiidae family in that region. In addition, E. imbricata is a new host recorded for C. stunkardi.


Relata-se a ocorrência de Amphiorchis caborojoensis Fischthal & Acholonu 1976 e Carettacola stunkardi Martin e Bamberger 1952, em um exemplar juvenil de tartaruga marinha de pente Eretmochelys imbricata Linnaeus 1758 no Brasil. Foram coletados cinco trematódeos da espécie A. caborojoensis, dois no intestino delgado e três no fígado e dois exemplares adultos de C. stunkardi no lavado corporal. Destes apenas a espécie A. caborojoensis já tinha sido relatada como parasita dessa espécie de quelônio marinho. Esta é a primeira descrição de parasitas em E. imbricata em águas brasileiras e na área do Atlântico Sul Ocidental, e o segundo relato de membros da família Spirorchiidae na mesma região.

ABSTRACT

The aerobic cloacal and nasal bacterial flora of 45 apparently healthy female olive ridley sea turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea )was studied at Nancite nesting beach,in Santa Rosa National Park (Costa Rican North Pacific)during July and August 2002.Bacterial samples were obtained by inserting sterile swabs directly into the cloaca and the nasal cavities of the turtles.Ninety-nine aerobic bacterial isolates, including 10 Gram-negative and 5 Gram-positive bacteria, were recovered.The most common bacteria cultured were Aeromonas spp. (13/45) and Citrobacter freundi (6/45)from cloacal samples and Bacillus spp.(32/45), Staphylococcus aureus (6/45)and Corynebacterium spp.(5/45)from nasal ducts.The results of the present study showed that the aerobic bacterial flora of nesting female olive ridleys was composed of several potential human and animal microbe pathogens.


Con el objetivo de determinar la flora normal aerobia, cloacal y nasal de la tortuga lora (Lepidochelys olivacea ), entre los meses de julio y agosto del 2002,se colectaron muestras bacteriológicas de 45 quelonios aparentemente sanos,durante el desove en Playa Nancite,Parque Nacional Santa Rosa, Costa Rica, a través del uso de hisopos estériles que se introdujeron en la cloaca y en uno de los conductos nasales. De las muestras recolectadas se obtuvieron e identificaron un total de 99 aislamientos, incluyendo 10 grupos de Gram-negativos y 5 de Gram-positivos. De cada tortuga se obtuvo un promedio de 0.7 bacterias de la cloaca y 1.4 de las cavidades nasales. Las bacterias más frecuente halladas fueron Aeromonas spp.(13/45) y Citrobacter freundi (6/45) en la cloaca, y Bacillus spp. (32/45),Staphylococcus aureus (6/45)y Corynebacterium spp.(5/45)en las cavidades nasales. En este investigación, la flora microbiana de las tortugas lora resultó constituida por microorganismos potencialmente patógenos para el ser humano y las tortugas.
